Audio Emporium

ABCs

What’s the best way to build a fine music system? We can help you. I was scouring my hi-fi mags the other day. While I enjoy reading about nice audio gear, these guys have gotten flippin’ RIDICULOUS. The disproportionate attention paid to absurdly priced gear is flat out insulting. They regularly review preamps and power amps for $25-100k. They write routinely about…

Bryston BI200 Rave

The Bryston Bi-200 integrated amp arrived late yesterday. Plugged in and playing! I cannot begin to tell you how large the grin is on my face. This has replaced a very capable 50-watt per side amp. The difference in terms of driving my speakers is staggering, especially at lower volume. It’s like the house has come to life for the very first time! I have been covering the industry for 25 years and this is the first amp that has generated such an immediate emotional experience in me!

Speakers For About $4k Per Pair

I’d have to say that $4k per pair is probably our most active price point for cut above speakers. We have great candidates at $1k per pair, $2k per pair and $3k per pair. I’m not nay saying any of those lower price points. But what we are finding these days is that many customers who have had more than entry level…

CD Players 2024

I love CDs and the players that play them. What a marvelous format for playing music! Artists typically have a program or musical message they want to deliver. Just hit play and you’re set for 40-80 minutes. You don’t incur any clicks/pops or bobsled noise. It couldn’t be easier. And, playing a CD sounds better than streaming. Yes, it does. As a…

Speakers: The Big Picture

In an earlier post I guesstimated there must be 500 or more speaker makers out there. As I’ve done more research, I’m going to double that guesstimate! “Companies” range from a one man band in a basement or industrial park space to very sophisticated industrial operations. With a thousand or so entities to consider, how do you pick the one that’s right…

Stereophile August 2023 Issue

Stereophile is the ugliest audio mag out there. But I still enjoy reading it for CONTENT. There are things to learn every month if you fight through the fine print. By ugly I mean, it always has tiny pictures and even tinier captions. I don’t need glasses to read. But with Stereophile, it’s GETTING CLOSE! Sometimes it’s hard to even be sure…

Dave’s Faves – Bryston A3

Bryston A3 Speakers, $3290 Per Pair (37.5h, 9.25w, 15d, 53 lbs, 87 dB, 6 ohms, Walnut, Black, Boston Cherry) Bryston’s A3 is THE speaker that separates the men from the boys. Or, more specifically, A3 distinguishes muscle and upper crust quality manufacturing, from mediocrity and spotty reliability. A3 is priced right there with a zillion Chinese imports. It is built to a…
