Home Theater Amps
I’m sorry to tell you that when companies rate their home theater receivers or amps, they let the advertising department run wild. The specs are sheer nonsense.
If a surround receiver or amp claims 85×5, it means maybe 85w, one channel driven, at 1kHz, 4 ohms, at 10% distortion.
An honest company, like Atoll, rates its amps:
85×5
All channels being driven simultaneously
20-20k
8 ohms
.1 % THD.
Consequently, when you evaluate Atoll’s amps, the ratings are honest, comparable to a legit RMS stereo rating.
With this in mind, you can begin to get a handle on why Atoll is different from the Chinese imports that lie their fannies off on the spec sheets.
Further, Atoll uses the same quality of exquisite parts in its multi channel amps as it does in its stereo amps. Atoll doesn’t use tiny transformers and chips to drive your speakers.
Each amp uses a pair of Atoll’s outstanding 340VA transformers.
Each amp uses high values of filter capacitance.
Each amp uses MATCHED MOSFET output transistors.
Running an Atoll multi-channel amp with whatever receiver or prepro you have, will up your sound dramatically.
I recommend spending light on the receiver or prepro, so you can afford to spend more on a great power amp. The power amp’s task is much tougher than the prepro.
The Atoll amps bring high “water pressure” to your speakers- instead of a trickle. Hence, I’m fine getting an affordable surround receiver with pre outs- and then muscle up with Atoll power to get some real octane out of your speakers.
