I’ve been complaining how Chinese mass production has taken over the market. There are hundreds of speakers coming out of various job houses over there with different names on them, like labeling golf shirts.

I am picking on Martin Logan here because they were reviewed thoroughly in Hi-Fi News recently. Their details were unveiled and the commentary summarized, “It’s full of surprises.”

I could have taken any of the hundreds of similarly priced and manufactured speakers to reveal the same results. In fact, in the same Hi-Fi News, a review was done on the Castle Windsor Duke. I’m old enough to remember the Castle name fondly. It was made in the UK and competitive with Rogers, Linn, Celestion, Mission etc. But of course when you start investigating, you realize it’s just another name on a box.

The first claim is that Duke is make in the UK. But then we read that the drivers come from China and it’s assembled the UK. Are you joking me? If you’re gonna do that, just build it in China so it will be cheap, instead of the 8” 2-way running $4500 per pair. It uses an old school poly cone and fabric dome tweeter. The writer tells us the grills fall off because the magnets aren’t strong enough to hold them on. They claim an 8 ohm impedance but it drops to 4.3 right in the bass where it matters. It’s a classic old school walnut box style that makes us old guys wistful. But reading closely, it’s just another brand and model punched out of a mass production house in Shenzhen, China. Shenzhen has a population of 18 million people, just a bit north of Hong Kong.
