About four months ago customer Jim called me about distortion in his system. He has a nice array of gear based a Bryston Mini A speakers. His are about six years old. He still has 14 years of warranty left on them. There’s no rush to bring them in. Yet virtually any other speakers would be out of warranty by now.
Yep, Bryston speakers come with a 20 year warranty.
Jim likes to let ‘er rip more than every once in a while. He told me he thought his tweeters were toast. I said, Bryston tweeters are really tough. That’s unlikely. But of course, it’s possible. Bring them in and we’ll check them out.
Jim doesn’t live very close to Audio Emporium. It’s a 45 min drive.
Jim called again a month later. He said he still has distortion but has determined the Bryston midrange drivers are out. Do we have replacements? I said yes, we do.
But I really doubt that the midrange drivers or tweeters are bad. They’re really tough. But of course, it is possible. Bring them in and we’ll check them out.
One delay led to another and finally, four months after his first call, Jim made it up to the shop with his Bryston Mini A speakers. I was anticipating having to change out some torched drivers.
But.. NOPE.
The Mini As sounded GREAT. They had plenty of bass, sounded clear and we played them to a healthy, yet not abusive volume level. Jim heard it for himself. He was puzzled. He’s been an audiophile for 40 years.
There must be some other problem in his system. Jim pursued the easiest path in searching for a repair. While the speakers reveal distortion, they’re not necessarily the source of the distortion.
With Bryston speakers in the chain, they’re the LEAST likely link in the chain to be broken.
