Al visited from out of town recently. He looked around the store and saw a lot of Bryston speakers. He asked with a confused look, “With all the speakers on the market, why do you sell Bryston? I know they make great amps with a 20 year warranty. But why do you sell their speakers? I didn’t even know they made speakers.”
Al answered the question with his own statement.
20 Year Warranty!
There are lots of good sounding speakers on the market. Bryston is right there with the best of the best in terms of sonic smoothness, powerful bass and being tough as nails. They’re made in Canada, not China, and have a 20 YEAR WARRANTY!
If you audition a lot of speakers, you’re going to like many of them. They all have something to offer or they wouldn’t be in biz. It’s fun to learn the personality of each speaker. But there is no brand out their built BETTER than Bryston for apples to apples money.
There are thousands of sonic flavors for you to consider when you shop. If you have a dozen listeners audition a dozen brands, you may well have a dozen different speaker choices. All of the choices except Bryston, are likely to provide a 5 year warranty.
At decision time- only ONE BRAND has a 20 year warranty. That’s Bryston.
If you choose to buy another brand because of its different character, that’s fine. But going forward a decade, that small character difference may prove quite costly to you.
Consistency
First of all, Bryston makes its own speakers, in its own house, in Canada. They make their own drivers with unparalleled QC and power capabilities..
Most of the other speaker companies out there don’t make their own parts. They BUY drivers from vendors. Even if they make their own drivers, they do not have Bryston’s QC or power capabilities.
If they DID, they would have a 20 year warranty. But they CAN’T. It would be too costly over time to eat all those repairs.
A decade or more down the road Bryston WILL have replacement drivers if you need them.
Repairs
I’ve been in the audio biz since 1970 and can tell you it is RARE for any company to have the same replacement drivers even a decade out from purchase date. This includes reputable companies like Polk, B&W, Paradigm and many more.
Let’s say brand x uses drivers made by Vifa. Vifa doesn’t make the same tweeters forever. A decade later it is highly probable that the Vifa tweeter you blew in your speaker- is no longer available.
Do you just buy something else that will fit in the box? Really?
Do you replace your speakers? Probably.
I think it’s smarter to buy Bryston that will NOT put you in this position.
You see, when you have service needs outside of warranty, you are now a profit opportunity for the speaker company you bought from. They can charge you $200 for a tweeter that cost them $20. You’re their hostage.
N American & Europe
Bryston… is made in Canada. I want to support companies from N America or Europe.
I’m not interested in selling Chinese built speakers. I’m not saying the Chinese can’t make good sounding speakers. The vast majority of Chinese made speakers come from job houses with names we cannot pronounce- regardless of the name on the box.
They generally make speakers with a bright top end to grab your attention, and thin bass because they cut corners on their driver and cabinet construction. Bryston makes cast (vs stamped) drivers and thick Rangerwood (vs thinner MDF) cabinets.
The fact is, Chinese speakers are cheap because they’re made at virtually slave labor costs. Most work on the 996 schedule. That is, 9am to 9pm, 6 days a week= 72 hours at $2 per hour. Many production facilities have barracks for their employees. Given the alternative working conditions for most labor jobs in China, these employees are thrilled to have these jobs.
I don’t want to support products made on this basis.
