McIntosh XR-100 Speakers, $10,000 Per Pair
(Red Walnut Gloss, Piano Black Gloss, Pear Maple: 51h, 8w, 18.5d, 69 lbs, 87dB SPL)
McIntosh is known first and foremost for its world class power amps. They make so many variations that even we dealers can’t keep them all straight!
Next in line, Mac is known for magnificent matching preamps, integrated amps and CD players/transports.
This brings us to SPEAKERS. Yep, just in are the SLEEK, super impressive XR-100s.
Ours are finished in a stunningly gorgeous Gloss Red Walnut.
Mac wanted these speakers to fit into a normal living room. They’re only 8” wide. Think about that for a second. Our industry is full of cheap towers from China that are wider! Despite being major league speakers, XR-100s take up no more room than most big box towers.
We have to ask, in such a lean profile, can Mac deliver powerful bass? The answer, predictably, is YES! Please note these boys are 18.5” deep. SO WHAT?! Mac was smart to garner its enclosure capacity from depth, instead of width.
The driver configuration is fascinating. XR-100 is a 4-way design that needs some horsepower. No problem! It’s a Mac! Let’s start from the top down.
Oh… before we get into the bullet points, let me point out that the Mid-Tweet elements are all mounted on a rock solid, machined aluminum 5/8” baffle plate. This is a BIG DEAL in that the cabinet has rigidity competitive with much costlier aluminum cabinet construction that would bring a speaker of this size in at $50k and 200 lbs!
Oh…the cabinet isn’t cookie cutter. XR-100 features non parallel internal side panes to avoid standing waves. The cabinet has numerous braces to defeat ringing.
